Some lock problems can wait for a convenient appointment. Others can't. Here are four situations where it pays to call a locksmith promptly, and what to do before they arrive. Whatever happens, resist the urge to pry a door or break a window: it often turns a small problem into an expensive repair.
1. Your lock has been tampered with or forced
Signs include loose hardware, a latch that no longer lines up, fresh scratches around the keyway or a door that won't close properly. If you think someone has been inside, leave and call the police first. Once it is safe, a locksmith can repair or replace the lock and strike, and rekey other doors.
2. Your smart or keypad lock has failed
Dead batteries, firmware glitches or a damaged keypad can leave you outside. Try the manufacturer's emergency power or backup key option first. If that fails, a locksmith experienced with electronic locks can open the door, troubleshoot the unit and repair or replace it.
3. Your keys are lost or stolen and there is no spare
If your keys were stolen along with something showing your address, treat it as urgent. Rekeying makes the missing keys useless, and new keys can be cut on site.
4. You are locked out of a safe or file cabinet
Forgotten combinations, dead keypad batteries and lost cabinet keys are common at home and in offices. Locksmiths can often open these with non-destructive methods, then reset the combination or supply a new key.
Why a local locksmith helps
A local business can tell you directly when a technician is likely to arrive, explain pricing in plain terms and come back easily if you need follow-up work. National call centres may pass your job to whoever is available.
Be prepared
- Save a local locksmith's number in your phone now.
- Keep a spare key with someone you trust.
- Replace smart lock batteries on schedule.
